Further Information

These maps display projected changes in average annual temperatures under 2 °C (3.6 °F) and 3 °C (5.4 °F) of warming, compared to 1991-2020 climate normals. These projections were derived from the 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIP6).††

Northern regions are projected to warm faster than southern regions, due to a combination of factors including decreasing albedo (reflected sunlight, often due to loss of snowpack) and patterns of convection and water vapor transport.†† However, southern regions of the country are still projected to experience higher average temperatures, and more days of high temperatures.
