Further Information
These maps display the annualized frequency and risk scores for wildfires in 2025.
Wildfires pose a severe risk to communities, both through the direct threat they pose to life and property, and through wildfire smoke, which can impact areas hundreds of miles away.† Wildfires can devastate large regions and cause massive economic losses, with one report estimating that climate-exacerbated wildfires cost the country up to $893 billion each year.† In America, nearly 85% of wildland fires are caused by human activity.†
The risk of wildfires grows in heat waves, dry conditions and during high winds. As climate change increases the intensity and duration of both heat and drought, the frequency and severity of wildfires is projected to increase in turn, especially in the western United States.† Since 1970, "fire weather" in America has grown 1 month longer on average,† and it's estimated that the number of buildings lost to wildfires could triple by 2060.†
While maps and projections can show community-level wildfire risk, danger to individual homes is driven primarily by construction materials and landscaping/vegetation in the immediate area.† As such, the best way to asses your property-level risk is through an individual home assessment.† If you live in a wildfire-prone area, having an emergency kit and evacuation plan prepared is key to ensuring your safety.†
