Further Information
These maps display the change in annual days below 32 °F (freezing) under 2 °C (3.6 °F) and 3 °C (5.4 °F) of warming, compared to 1991-2020 climate normals. These projections were derived from the 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIP6).††
Freezing temperatures are essential to plant, animal, and insect life cycles, as well as for recharging snowpack and sustaining winter economies.† Warming winters can disrupt agriculture, increase the range and population of disease-carrying insects, exacerbate allergies from pollen, and reduce environmental carbon storage.††
As northern regions are projected to warm faster than southern regions, these changes are most pronounced at higher latitudes.†
